Exciting News: Baby Number 2 is on the way!
Santa brought us an early Christmas gift this year. We found out we are going to have another baby! That's right, Jack is going to be a big brother!
Our first doctors appointment didn't go off very smoothly (I basically refused to let them touch me - yikes) so we didn't get more than a quick twenty second long ultrasound to make sure the baby was positioned where they needed to be and get a prescription for morning sickness before we were out the door. So we didn't get an official due date, but for now we are just following the normal calculations and saying we're due June 24th. We're excited to celebrate so many family birthdays that month. From the ultrasound they were actually measuring a little ahead of schedule, so James might get a birthday present? Who knows.
So far baby #2 has a strong heartbeat, is measuring around 3 1/2 inches (about the size of a lemon), weighs roughly 1 1/2 ounces, only likes eating salty things in the morning like toast and eggs, likes mom to take a lot of naps during the day with older brother Jack, and craves a lot of salads, apples, popsicles, and pizza.
We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

When is the last time you cried?
At Disneyland. Had a little bit of a breakdown at 2:30 in the morning. I don't really remember too much but it had something to do with feeling bad that jack wasn't wearing socks to bed and I didn't buy James a hat at disneyland... Oh the joys of hormones.

Excitement and Housing Issues...
The unfortunate side of this news?
Our housing definitely didn't go through on us like we were planning on - so we are frantically scrambling to find a low rent 2 bedroom apartment. The shorter the contract the better. If anyone hears of anything PLEASE let us know. We would really -really- love having a place to live out of the freezing weather.
I heard it snowed in Idaho/Utah today. We aren't quite looking forward to the icy roads, but regardless - IDAHO HERE WE COME!
Oh, and the other exciting news?! Only 2 more days until DISNEYLAND! Our first family vacation! Yeah baby! If you couldn't tell we're pretty excited! :)

Melissa, Jen, Betsy - It never hurts to try, right?
Good luck!

Twilight may be the worst movie I've seen this year...
So no one told me that the movie Twilight was bad. They said it was cheesy, but good. I had person after person tell me that they liked it, etc. So I thought - well it can't be that bad, so James and I went and bought our tickets five minutes before the movie started, got awesome seats, and even had time to text my family to make sure Jack was still sleeping. The movie started and there were squeels of excitement from around the theater. The movie started.
That was about when the excitement left the room.
You know it's bad when Edward is introduced and everyone in the room laughs, not because it's a funny scene, but because of how awkward the movie gets. I think there was laughter for most of the movie after that, most of it from all the horrible acting, bad effects, and direction of the movie. When we left the theater the various groups of people started to talk about their reaction to the movie. I would have to agree with one sentiment we heard behind us as we got to our car.
"I've seen animated characters act better." and "I can't believe a movie could ever be that bad..."
Things I liked about the movie:
Bella was less annoying in this movie than the actress has ever been in any other movie I've seen. That's a good thing. (Though notice all the twitching and eye blinking and stuttering that the director didn't help her through...) I think with out her as the lead role the movie would have been a lot worse.
I LOVED Charlie. I thought he was cooler than he was in the book.
I liked Renee.
I liked Esme.
I thought the school kids all did a great job acting their parts.
Jacob was how I thought he would be. Nice, friendly, cute, and not a big part.
I thought Esme, Alice, and Emmett did a great job. They were hardly seen in the movie (excluding Alice), but they were fine. Esme and Alice were close to how I pictured them. Emmett looked different, but acted very true to the story. I thought they did a great job and am looking forward to seeing more from these actors.
Victoria was cooler than I expected. I thought she did a good job taunting and am looking forward to seeing more from her.
The rare moments when Edward smiles
All the Peter Parker moments I will take with me (Basically every scene Edward and Jasper were in)
Things that ruined the movie:
All the bad acting, mostly from Jasper and Edward Cullen.
How weird Edward was the entire movie.
The weird dancing thing the vampires do around the fire at the end. What the heck?
Mis-casting: Rosalie, Edward, and Carlisle for me.
The low budget effects. In this day and age if you know you are going to have to be doing a special effects movie (ie-perhaps a vampire movie?) you can't do a good job of it or give it full justice if you don't spend the money on it. The effects were horrible. I seriously felt embarrased. (Running up trees? The way they flew around? Baseball anyone? GAG!)
The editing/camera angles/lighting - everything.
I will say I came with low expectations and I'm glad I did. I went into it trying to think of it as a made-for-tv movie and it was still worse than any tv show I would ever spend time watching. People are still telling me they loved the movie - even my own sisters really liked it. I guess it comes down to the fact that I don't like spending $20 on low budget movies that waste my time and are basically sucking the life out of me. But that may just be me.
Final score? Two thumbs way down, though it was better than Eragon. So if you liked Eragon then this might be the movie for you.

Twilight: To go or Not To Go???
Harry Potter was supposed to open today in theaters, but was pushed back to July 2009.
So instead of watching this (Sigh)
We get this:
I don't know, I don't really feel quite the same anticipation...
Now don't get me wrong. I know there are very avid fans of the Twilight books and series, just like I am an avid fan of Harry Potter. I read and bought all the Twilight books, and I looked forward to the new books coming out, etc. However, I am not obsessed... probably because I already found myself a guy who I think is ten times (probably more like 1000 times) more hunky than Edward, so there really hasn't been a reason to swoon over the series because I think my own love story is cooler than there's anyways. (Sorry fan base...) I did think the whole vampire differences were intriguing, but the storylines left a lot to be desired. Okay, I am ranting. Needless to say - I like Twilight, I am just not in love with it.
For those of you who have read my blogs before you already know this - and also know that I have not thought very much of the movie trailers and behind the scenes action of the movie. The movie looks extra cheesy, which I can stomach - but it looks like they didn't do it on purpose. They chose a director who has been credited for some of the worst movies in Hollywood so I can't really put too much hope that she will miraculously make a 'masterpiece'. I'm hoping that for the 2nd movie they are talking about making the studio will realize their mistake and put someone better in for the directing role. Needless to say, it doesn't have my highest hopes of it being a great movie.
So I wasn't planning on watching it in the theaters.
My dear husband this morning asked me, though, if I wanted to see it with him tonight - and I find myself half tempted to go. Because I have such low expectations it might be better than I expect. And at least I will have a husband who has the same sense of humor as me who I will be able to laugh with at all the cheesy parts, and make faces with if I think it gets too much.
So all you friends who went to the midnight showing - is it worth it? Did you guys like the movie? What are your thoughts? It didn't get any Fs from the film critics, which is better than Catwoman right?

Christmas Present Idea...

I would highly recommend the book "His Needs Her Needs" by Willard Harley Jr. for all you married couples out there. I pretty much think it's the greatest! Check it out! I really think it can work miracles in a person's marriage. It has in mine. :)

It's the little things...
Has anyone noticed how amazing something as simple as concern can really affect the way you feel and look at life? I am amazed at what a difference it has made personally in my life this past week and how much stronger I feel my relationship is with my husband because he has really made an effort to show me he cares for me by little acts of kindness and affection. Even though James and I have been sick literally all week... I fell in love with him all over again - every time he asked me how I was feeling, took my hand, brought me a treat home from work, volunteered to take Jack, sang to me so I could fall asleep, tried to put on a movie to side track me from my throbbing headache or wanting to throw up, carry Jack upstairs to put down for a nap because I was so exhausted... Even though I physically felt just as bad it made it a lot more bearable because I had someone there to share the journey with and share the load with, and I knew they wanted to be there to help.
It's amazing what an impact true affection can have on forging through murky waters and illness.
I've been thinking a lot about the blessings in my life as I've began to fast and pray this month and I can honestly say that I have never had a bigger blessing in my life than the gift God gave me when he brought my husband into my life.

:( Sad...
Having a car break down on you (that you just fixed last month)
and
having the throwing-up-for-hours-on-end-type-of-flu (accompanied with a migraine instead of a cherry on top) make for a very sad weekend. :(
Brighter side:
Our car most likely will be under warranty (hopefully they will actually figure out what makes it decide to lock up and not shift) and the flu is long gone so I enjoyed my ritual of eating a chocolate chip cookie tonight after dinner. Mmmm.

Halloween!
Something that we are going to be trying with our little family is an idea I got from a conversation I had with my sister Wendy. She said that she has noticed how excited her children get when she and Ron dress up and join in on the celebration. It really makes their day that it's a family event and they have their parents dress up with them. So James and I are going to follow suit. It's actually not that much of a jump since Halloween is James' favorite holiday and I think he loves having an excuse to dress up. We still haven't decided on our costumes. You have to be somewhat creative if you're going to come up with something on a budget. I have a feeling I'm going to crumble when I see something really cute for Jack... Is anyone else like that? You can hold off on things for you but you're helpless when it comes to the kid?
Oh, and as a side note - has anyone else noticed the lack of normal women's costumes because they've been taken over by all the 'sexy' costumes? You have to look through 20 sexy costumes before you come to a normal one. It's pretty ridiculous.

Introducing...

We're still working out the kinks (ie-designing it) but we thought we would give you a sneak peek at what we have been up to. We have had an interest in photography since Jack has been born and we didn't know anyone in the area to take cute pictures of him. Who knew what a HUGE difference a nice camera makes on the quality of the pictures. James even took a class in school to learn the technical aspects of the camera, which has helped us out a lot in understanding our camera even more. We spent a few hours taking pictures with Kevin's Nikon SLR camera and after that James was hooked. It was on the top of his wishlist to get a nice SLR camera! I finally agreed and we upgraded a few months ago to our new digital SLR Canon XS. We LOVE it. We think it is a wonderful investment! We have learned a lot about positioning, lighting, how to set up shots, etc. It's been a lot of fun, and we're hoping to just keep improving more and more with every new session.
So go check it out! Link it! Tell friends! We're doing our first few portrait sessions for FREE! (Well, not our wedding one we set up... c'mon. We do have a baby to feed.)

Little Alli
It has been so fun to watch Jeanette this week with her two little babies. She has two babies that are 12 months apart and she is doing such a terrific job with them both. I love to watch how in control she is with her life and where she wants to go. We're so glad she chose to come visit with us for the week!
This is her 2 month old Alli. I just love her soft hair!

Bryan helps the Hurricane Victims
The reason for her visit is because Bryan's work, APX Alarm, sent 83 of their employees to the Gulf Coast areas to help clean up the mess left from Hurricane Ike. He left Tuesday morning and thought Jeanette deserved some company while he was away. What a sweet husband!
Below are some pictures of Bryan in Texas. I am impressed that APX is paying their employees to spend the week cleaning up and helping the community. I think that is awesome that they would do that.
You can check out their progress on APX gives back.

Twilight Movie...
A few months ago I read her first chapter of Midnight Sun, which is the book Twilight's companion book that is from the vampire Edward's point of view. It was actually entertaining to read, and I found myself intrigued. Sadly the book may not be finished or completed, due to the recent leak on the internet of her first draft of the book (half way finished). She explains her feelings on the subject on her website and it has a link on there for her fans to read the partial draft that was leaked for those of you who are interested. I, for one, think it may be better to just wait and see if she decides to write it because the editing is obviously not very good and she hasn't tweaked it yet.
The whole reason for this post, however, is because I think the Twilight movie looks simply AWFUL. The vampire who plays edward is the same actor who plays our beloved Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies. I loved him in it, and thought he did a great job - so there is a small chance he may pull it off. That said, I think he looks really strange in all the trailers I have seen, and I think the special effects (ie-their vampire skills) look very cheesy, and the lines don't seem very well done. I'm disappointed because I think they could have done a good job with it and instead they are leaving it in the hands of someone who doesn't know very much about special affects, casting, etc... That's just my opinion. The girl who is playing Bella really annoyed me in another movie I watched her in so I'm sure that doesn't help either because every time I see her I feel like throwing up... This is just a trailer, however, so maybe the final product will be better.
What do you guys think? What are your guys' view on the Twilight universe? James and I laugh everytime we watch it, so we do find it entertaining and I probably will take him along with me in November to be amung all the girls that are dying to watch it, ha. Maybe not though, the more we watch the trailers...

Does this happen to anyone else?
I got my hair cut a few weeks ago (3 I think) and I still hate it. I liked it for a day, and then I was like "awww... I wish I had just trimmed it after all..."
Does this ever happen to anyone else, or is it just me? Its like when my hair is long all I can think of is how cute everyone's short hair is - so I cut it, and then all I think of is how pretty long hair is on everyone. I'm sure the fact that she didn't cut my hair the way I wanted (I kept telling her I wanted a more blunt cut in the back, not so inverted, and it shorter in the front... but it still didn't happen) - so the next time around I'll definitely find someone who does more what I want...
I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the hair. If anyone has any tips, please share. Maybe I'm just stupid and don't know how to use my flat iron or round brush right... With a baby I don't have the hour I used to have to do my hair before the baby came. :)

Sweet Surprises

We use to celebrate 'month' anniversaries our first year, and we always got a papa murphys pizza and watched a new movie, so James thought it would be fun to reminisce about the beginning of our marriage.
We actually didn't get past December of 06, which was just 3 months after we were married, but here are some of those things we remembered. There are a lot:
The Oregon Coast, Meeting Grandpa Barry and he was actually very well behaved, James getting me used to Katie in degrees (he used to have her sit with him on his side and slowly she would make her way over to be by me...), Having Halloween dinner with his parents while he had to work and watching Mommy Dearest (he was so jealous!), James cooked dinner everyday because he got home an hour before I did, Having to race through our showers because the water was only warm for a few minutes, The awful, awful smell of our apt. and lighting candles in all the rooms so we could breathe, Knowing we would always have one good home cooked meal every week because we ate at the Rognons on Sundays, Very loud neighbors, James driving everywhere because I didn't know how to drive a manual, Our crazy day trip to go to Grandpa's 90th birthday celebration and the last time I saw my Grandma before her paralysis took affect, Trying to work with only one cell phone, the Rognons van,... There are so many fun experiences with James... We could probably spend days just remembering all the wonderful experiences we have in our marriage.
We are reminded more and more frequently how blessed we are to have the gospel in our lives. What a blessing it has been for both of us to know that we will be together forever, in this life and in the one to come. I am reminded more and more lately at how lucky I am to have a husband who cherished me so much that there would be no question that we would make it to the temple. What a blessing that has been in our marriage knowing that we both have shown each other our deep commitment to each other and to having our marriage built on a solid and firm foundation so that when the hard times come we have something strong to fall back on. If we hadn't had that, I don't think we would be at the place where we are today, especially with having started a family so soon after we were married. I'm very certain we both would not be as happy and certain in our marriage as we are now with out the gospel guiding us in our lives.
I didn't mean to write a sermon about my love for James or marriage, but there you have it. It's just something that we talked about last night and it was just a reminder of what a blessing our temple marriage has been for us and the commitments we have made to each other.

These are the beautiful flowers. Jim cut them, arranged them, and even tied the little bow to the vase. Talented.

Sad Times

I was driving down the highway and when I reached the turn to my home I got out of 5th gear because I was slowing down, and when I tried to put in third I couldn't do it! As easy as that, my car became immobile and unmanageable. Even though I had used the breaks I was still stuck sticking out in the oncoming lane with traffic coming at me. Scared out of my mind, I turned off the car wondering if I had somehow done something crazy with the car. It turned on fine, but still I wasn't able to put it in gear and do anything. Car's were backing up behind us, and we were pretty scared with fast traffic driving by on both sides of us. My sister Julie luckily was with me, so she saw a window of opportunity where cars weren't coming at us, she got out of the car and pushed us the rest of the way so we were at least off the highway. I really do feel like we must have had some guardian angels watching out for us. I really was scared for our lives.
Who knew that the clutch was so unreliable? I didn't even know you had to replace clutches normally if you have a manual vehicle. I'm actually quite ticked off about it. It's costing us $1000 just to replace our stupid clutch, which apparently is a wear-and-tear item that isn't under warranty. So if we're going to have to replace our clutch every 3 years (our car is only 3 years old), by the time we've had the car for ten years we'll not only maybe have 2 more exciting near life experiences while our clutch goes out on us again, but we'll also have to fork over 2 more grand to get it replaced.
Ugh.
Stupid Manuals. I never liked them anyways, and now I have another reason to hate them!
Happy Anniversary to us.

And Jack's been in the lower end of the percentile for weight. I'd hate to think how other mother's feel with babies that have more average weight growth. Maybe think of something else to say with it if you can't help yourself but say they're chubby? Like comment on his beautiful eyes?

Rollin' in the dough...
Check out this fun article for all you stay at home mothers out there.
Doing your duty
As many of you know, there is A LOT of opposition going on with getting proposition 8 passed. Everyday we hear about more people and businesses putting thousands of dollars in donations for the other side. The CA secretary of state even changed the language on the ballot from saying "[Proposition 8] amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." to saying that the initiative "Changes California Constitution to eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry." The actual proposition remains the same (That only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California), but because of all the opposition to the proposition to keep marriage traditional between a man and a woman, there is already predictions that there will be a defeat unless the people make a significant stand.
With that said, we can not give up. My hat goes off to those who have been asked from the church to donate a certain amount of money and who have given it without complaint, not knowing whether it will do any good with the final outcome. Thank you for all of you who have stood together to try to protect the traditional merits of the home and family. James and I are both 'walking' on Saturday to give out information about prop 8 around the community with the local churches, so if anyone cares to join us we are meeting at the town pool/park at 8:30 a.m. Please bring friends.
Here are some more reasons that are not solely religious, for keeping marriage as a union between a man and a woman. I might write about those later.

Makeovers

If any of you are avid readers, you will know that I am dis-satisfied with my hair quite often. Most of the times when I make a change I am happy with it for at least a little while, but the last few changes (highlights, dying hair brown, etc) haven't quite done the job I was hoping for. There just hasn't been the "I LOVE IT" moment that I want.
So when I was looking around for a new hair styles I would like I found a site that lets you have virtual hairstyle makeovers. I tried on a variety of hairstyles, so here are just a few. They aren't necessarily ones I would choose or would do (ie-going all blonde or utterly short), but they were fun.

Blake Lively's hairstyle. Interesting.

That's what James would look like if he straightened his hair, haha. And I have Ashanti's inverted bob.

Katie Holmes' inverted bob.

Keira Knightley.

Katie Holmes' style with bangs.
I am more inclined towards the a-line or inverted bob style. I've always thought it was cute, so maybe it's about time to try it out, huh? I don't think I am going to do the bangs though... Maybe I won't do either. We're still looking. I think for now we'll just stick to virtually changing it until I decide what looks best. :) If any of you in the area know of a good stylist let me know too. Ours moved away. :(

Harvey Milk Day Anyone?
So instead of celebrating a holiday for a respected leader, like Harriet Tubman Day, the bill has been passed for the State Senate to have a holiday for a man that most of the population has never heard of...
To me, the sad thing is that the holiday will have to play a role in public school and other educational institutes, and "encourages those entities to conduct suitable commemorative exercises on that date."
I agree with what Sen. Dave Cox, who voted against the measure. "In school, we ought to concentrate on writing, reading and arithmetic,", and that schools don't need other requirements placed on them by the Legislature.
So all you Californian's out there, call Gov. Schwarzenegger's office and give him your support to veto this holiday. We don't need the headache!!!

Uglies and Pretties

My friend recommended this book to me, so I checked it out of the library and started to read. I will admit I found the writing style annoying, and it took me a while to get truly interested in the book (I was way past the half-way point when I actually started enjoying it). The ending was interesting, though, which made me want to read the second book - Pretties.

I enjoyed Pretties a lot!
The general idea of the books are that instead of having prejudice and racism based off of their looks, everyone gets the same operation done when they are 16 that makes everyone look beautiful with a type of 'plastic surgery'. The only problem is that once they get the operation done, they are changed from how they once were. There are a band of renegades, so to speak, that don't want to be made beautiful by the operation and it's their story of how they are tracked and hunted, etc.
I don't want to spoil the book too much, but the second book pretties was A LOT more interesting than the first book. I liked the characters in it a lot more (Shay and David in particular drove me crazy in the first book, as did Tally (the main character). She was a lot more likable in the 2nd book, as were the new characters introduced in the book. The plot was also a lot more fun to read, I thought.
I will warn you that the ending of Pretties will leave you wanting more! I made the mistake and have book 4 (extras) instead of book 3 (specials), so I'm still waiting on that one from the library.
So I will say, if you are a reader like me check them out. I think so far they're about as enjoyable to read as twilight... Maybe even more so, for me anyways. But I'll have to get to that topic at another date.

We're back in Cali!
On the bright side, sleeping in the same room as the baby is actually doable. That was a surprise to both of us. What a blessing. That was something we had worried a lot about. We had to allshare a room at Wendy's anyways, so we're hoping he continues to be okay with us all sharing the same space for the next little while.
We have a lot of projects to do to get adjusted to living in a room, as opposed to an entire apartment. Mostly unpacking and figuring out where we want everything to go. From there we are going to have to do a little more baby proofing for Jack (he puts EVERYTHING into his mouth) and of course we have to go swimming! (I left my swimsuit at Wendy's unfortunately, so James says he's going to have to buy me a new one. Oh darn! Ha)
Mom even I think is going to let me talk her into re-painting our room we're staying in. Niiiice!
So check out the family blog for the reunion, baby shower, baby blessing etc. pictures later when James or I get around to it. We also have some pretty cute pictures of the baby I should put up sometime.
For now there are some flies that obviously have a death wish, so I better go take care of that.

Memories (A fun game!)
ok...I like the idea of this game. I like to think that I leave some kind of an impression on people! (whether good or bad) So, the game is 1. As a comment on my blog, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn’t matter if you knew me a little or a lot, anything you remember!
2. Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It’s actually pretty funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I’ll assume you’re playing the game and I’ll come to your blog and leave one about you.
Not a fan of the new Batman movie...

My dad watched Dark Knight twice in the same day and said he liked it even better the second time,... so I figured if he saw it twice the first time must have been pretty good. We were pretty excited, since Jim and I both love the first one (even though the scarecrow seemed like a weak villain to me). I looked at the critic and user reviews and both gave the movie A ratings, or 9/10 stars. Wow, I thought. This must be good! Everyone talked about what a good job Heath Ledger did as Joker, the cool plot twists, awesome acting, etc. While all may be true: Heath Ledger did do a tremendous job acting the joker, there were many plot twists, and everyone (excluding Gyllenhaal who plays Rachel Dawes) does a good job acting their parts throughout the movie, I can honestly say I was not a fan. It felt like the whole movie you are getting pulled down a garbage disposal, and even though there were a few redeeming parts in the movie (ie-1 or 2 choices certain characters make), for the most part it was way too dark, violent, and depressing for me to truly say I left the movie amazed, in awe, or having any real good impression of the movie. I really don't like seeing people get killed, hung, cut, etc. So while I appreciated that they did not show close to any blood in the movie, I HATED basically every scene the joker was in for that reason.
So, I would say if you are a little squeemish about movies like me, check out the imdb moviebase and see if the violence level is something you can handle and want to watch. They cover the spoilers so you don't have to read those if you don't want to... (I did read the spoilers, so it actually helped me be a little more prepared for things that happened. Thank goodness! And these spoilers were more like "a main character does this", but it doesn't say which main character or when, etc. So I didn't feel like it ruined any plot points to me since it was voilent the entire movie so the parts could have happened anywhere.)
But like I said, James, my brothers, even my little sister Julie all really liked it and keep bringing it up to talk about. For those of you who saw it what did you think of the movie and why?

The Host

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of reading "The Host", a new novel by Stephenie Meyer (The author of the Twilight Series). "The Host" is a new twist on the Invasion of the body snatchers storyline. I was a little skeptical at first, but I went ahead and bought it and it was worth every cent. I could not put the book down. It was a tad bit drawn out, but unlike most books I was not bored even while I read about the dynamics of the alien species, etc. etc.
I think the only thing that bothered me in the book was the character Jared. Did anyone else have that same problem? I never liked him. So the whole 'jared' love triangle storyline was kind of a little over the top for me because the whole time I thought Ian was more likeable, etc. And does anyone else notice how the author (who is a mormon) has virgins as main characters (Bella, Wanda, etc) but instead of making a stand with her writing that it's better to wait to have sex until you're married (exception - edward, and even he was going to throw his morals out the window the last book) she has them being virgins only because they haven't had a boyfriend before then. I just thought that was kind of entertaining.
Even with that, however, I thought it was an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it. I enjoy Meyer's style of writing beause it's not too complicated to read and she really does have interesting views on things (aliens, vampires, werewolves, etc.) I enjoyed the Host more than the Twilight Series, but there's still one more book (due out next month!), so maybe the Vampire Series will redeem themselves with that last book.

7 random things:
1. I get annoyed when people ring our doorbell... This pet peeve really didn't happen until we had a baby, and now it is one of my biggest ones.
2. I love the ocean. It's beautiful and romantic. But I will admit that I am not a fan of swimming in it when I can't feel the ground. James is a fish and loved snorkling in Hawaii. I sat on the beach and watched.
3. I am not a phone person. I would much rather talk in person or email.
4. I really hate the Pillsborough doughboy cinnamon rolls. They are probably the grossest treat I've had. That and flan. Yuck.
5. I am deathly afraid of canoing. The last time I tried to overcome this fear my guide promised me they wouldn't capsize and we still managed to, and my cousin was very close to dying (he was dragged under water trapped under the canoe and my cousins couldn't get it up. I still think the only thing that helped was prayer). James swears I wouldn't be afraid with him, but there's no way I'm going near those things...
6. I went on my first motorcycle ride with James on our date on Tuesday. I'm glad I didn't test it out with him earlier or he would never have been able to talk me in to buying one. I seriously doubt I will want to ride on it again. Scared me to death.
7. I love sour things, but I would rather go a year with out sweets than to eat sour skittles again. My mouth was raw for days afterwards and I only ate a handful. Horrible.

You know it's bad when...

Last night at dinner we were sitting down and I realized that James had a large glass of milk in front of him. I instantly reacted, taking the milk from him and accusing him. "James, I thought you weren't going to drink milk!" He looked at me, eyebrows raised and was quiet for a second, and then said softly "I thought it was the best thing to drink..." I rolled my eyes, and got up to get him something else. He's been having stomach issues for EVER so he had finally listened to me and was trying to lay of dairy for a few days to see if that would help.
I surveyed the things we had to drink in the fridge. I realized I hadn't refilled the last bit of water I had drank, so that left him with no water. I'd pushed the juice to the back so it was frozen solid. If he had tried to drink the gatorade I had got him for his soccer games I wouldn't have been all too happy. There was some soda pop in there, but I get really annoyed everytime he drinks soda because I think its useless calories and so unhealthy. The only thing left was milk, which at least is a good source of calcium.
So I went down at sat next to him and I said "Wow. You know you've gotten pretty moody when your husband has to decide which item he'll get yelled at 'less' for taking out of the fridge..." We both kind of laughed about it, but it was a reminder to not dwell on all the stupid little things that don't matter in the long run and focus on the important things, like cultivating your relationship and friendship.

1 Pampered Girl
Then I got an hour long facial and spent the whole time talking baby with her (she was 5 months pregnant with her first and so when she found out I had a 6 month old we did not lack in conversation). My skin has not felt as smooth as it does now. It's awesome.
Still a little pricy, and I was a little peeved because I got jipped some money because they charged me wrong,... but all in all it was still nice to feel pampered for the day. Thank you honey!
Oh and for all the 'first timers' you do take your bra off, but you can keep on the underwear. Good to know. I didn't, and I kept my garment top on and the masseuse kind of laughed and said "I can't really get the oil on your back with that on." Kinda embarrasing. So if any of you are naive like I, now you are warned and hopefully you won't have to worry like I did. :)

An amendment...
In a letter to be read next week aloud from the pulpit in the California wards, the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints has asked us to take a stand.
"The church's teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and the formation of families is central to the Creator's plan for His children,
"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to ensure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage."
Since Jim and I will be supporting the proposal to bring about the amendment that marriage is legal only between a man and a woman, I felt that I should explain our views on the matter and express the reasons behind it. I hope this will help those not of our faith understand our views better, and perhaps help those that are members to have more knowledge on the Church's stance.Since Elder Oaks explains it better than I ever could, I'll turn to him for our answer. I found a wonderful interview online that explains our beliefs better than any article I have read. If you have any questions regarding our beliefs I suggest you read it. I am only quoting parts of the article below, so if you are interested further please investigate the interview more.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS:At the outset, can you explain why this whole issue of homosexuality and same-gender marriage is important to the Church?
ELDER OAKS: This is much bigger than just a question of whether or not society should be more tolerant of the homosexual lifestyle. Over past years we have seen unrelenting pressure from advocates of that lifestyle to accept as normal what is not normal, and to characterize those who disagree as narrow-minded, bigoted and unreasonable. Such advocates are quick to demand freedom of speech and thought for themselves, but equally quick to criticize those with a different view and, if possible, to silence them by applying labels like “homophobic.” In at least one country where homosexual activists have won major concessions, we have even seen a church pastor threatened with prison for preaching from the pulpit that homosexual behavior is sinful. Given these trends, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must take a stand on doctrine and principle. This is more than a social issue — ultimately it may be a test of our most basic religious freedoms to teach what we know our Father in Heaven wants us to teach.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: What of those who might say, “Okay. Latter-day Saints are entitled to believe whatever they like. If you don’t believe in same-gender marriages, then it’s fine for you. But why try to regulate the behavior of other people who have nothing to do with your faith, especially when some nations in Europe have legally sanctioned that kind of marriage? Why not just say, ‘We don’t agree with it doctrinally for our own people’ and leave it at that. Why fight to get a Constitutional amendment [in the United States], for example?ELDER WICKMAN: We’re not trying to regulate people, but this notion that ‘what happens in your house doesn’t affect what happens in my house’ on the subject of the institution of marriage may be the ultimate sophistry of those advocating same-gender marriage.
Some people promote the idea that there can be two marriages, co-existing side by side, one heterosexual and one homosexual, without any adverse consequences. The hard reality is that, as an institution, marriage like all other institutions can only have one definition without changing the very character of the institution. Hence there can be no coexistence of two marriages. Either there is marriage as it is now defined and as defined by the Lord, or there is what could thus be described as genderless marriage. The latter is abhorrent to God, who, as we’ve been discussing, Himself described what marriage is — between a man and a woman.
A redefinition of that institution, therefore, redefines it for everyone — not just those who are seeking to have a so-called same gender marriage. It also ignores the definition that the Lord Himself has given.
ELDER OAKS: There’s another point that can be made on this. Let’s not forget that for thousands of years the institution of marriage has been between a man and a woman. Until quite recently, in a limited number of countries, there has been no such thing as a marriage between persons of the same gender. Suddenly we are faced with the claim that thousands of years of human experience should be set aside because we should not discriminate in relation to the institution of marriage. When that claim is made, the burden of proving that this step will not undo the wisdom and stability of millennia of experience lies on those who would make the change. Yet the question is asked and the matter is put forward as if those who believe in marriage between a man and a woman have the burden of proving that it should not be extended to some other set of conditions.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: There are those who would say that that might have applied better in the 1950s or earlier than in the 21st century. If you look at several nations in Europe, for example, traditional marriage is so rapidly on the decline that it is no longer the norm. If marriage is evolving, ought we to resist those kind of social changes?
ELDER OAKS: That argument impresses me as something akin to the fact that if we agree that the patient is sick and getting sicker, we should therefore approve a coup de grace. The coup de grace which ends the patient’s life altogether is quite equivalent to the drastic modification in the institution of marriage that would be brought on by same-gender marriage.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: You talked about the harm that could come on society by redefining marriage. What would you say to those people who declare: “I know gay people who are in long-term committed relationships. They’re great people. They love each other. What harm is it going to do my marriage as a heterosexual to allow them that same ‘rite?’
ELDER WICKMAN: Let me say again what I said a moment ago. I believe that that argument is true sophistry, because marriage is a unified institution. Marriage means a committed, legally sanctioned relationship between a man and a woman. That’s what it means. That’s what it means in the revelations. That’s what it means in the secular law. You cannot have that marriage coexisting institutionally with something else called same-gender marriage. It simply is a definitional impossibility. At such point as you now, as an institution, begin to recognize a legally-sanctioned relationship, a committed relationship between two people of the same gender, you have now redefined the institution to being one of genderless marriage.
As we’ve mentioned in answer to other questions, [genderless marriage] is contrary to God’s law, to revealed Word. Scripture, ancient and modern, could not be clearer on the definition that the Lord and His agents have given to marriage down through the dispensations.
But it has a profound effect in a very secular way on everybody else. What happens in somebody’s house down the street does in very deed have an effect on what happens in my house and how it’s treated. To suggest that in the face of these millennia of history and the revelations of God and the whole human pattern they have the right to redefine the whole institution for everyone is presumptuous in the extreme and terribly wrong-headed.
ELDER OAKS: Another point to be made about this is made in a question. If a couple who are cohabiting, happy, and committed to one another want to have their relationship called a marriage, why do they want that? Considering what they say they have, why do they want to add to it the legal status of marriage that has been honored and experienced for thousands of years? What is it that is desired by those who advocate same-gender marriage? If that could be articulated on some basis other than discrimination, which is not a very good argument, it would be easier to answer the question that you have asked, and I think it would reveal the soundness of what we’ve already heard.
There are certain indicia of marriage — certain legal and social consequences and certain legitimacy — which if given to some relationship other than marriage between a man and a woman tend to degrade if not destroy the institution that’s been honored over so many thousands of years.
In addition, if people want to legalize a particular relationship, we need to be careful if that kind of relationship has been disapproved for millennia. Suddenly there’s a call to legalize it so they can feel better about themselves. That argument proves a little too much. Suppose a person is making a living in some illegal behavior, but feels uneasy about it. (He may be a professional thief or he may be selling a service that is illegal, or whatever it may be.) Do we go out and legalize his behavior because he’s being discriminated against in his occupational choices or because he doesn’t feel well about what he’s doing and he wants a ‘feel good’ example, or he wants his behavior legitimized in the eyes of society or his family? I think the answer is that we do not legalize behavior for those reasons unless they are very persuasive reasons brought forward to make a change in the current situation.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: Would you extend the same argument against same-gender marriage to civil unions or some kind of benefits short of marriage?
ELDER WICKMAN: One way to think of marriage is as a bundle of rights associated with what it means for two people to be married. What the First Presidency has done is express its support of marriage and for that bundle of rights belonging to a man and a woman. The First Presidency hasn’t expressed itself concerning any specific right. It really doesn’t matter what you call it. If you have some legally sanctioned relationship with the bundle of legal rights traditionally belonging to marriage and governing authority has slapped a label on it, whether it is civil union or domestic partnership or whatever label it’s given, it is nonetheless tantamount to marriage. That is something to which our doctrine simply requires us to speak out and say, “That is not right. That’s not appropriate.”
As far as something less than that — as far as relationships that give to some pairs in our society some right but not all of those associated with marriage — as to that, as far as I know, the First Presidency hasn’t expressed itself. There are numbers of different types of partnerships or pairings that may exist in society that aren’t same-gender sexual relationships that provide for some right that we have no objection to. All that said… there may be on occasion some specific rights that we would be concerned about being granted to those in a same-gender relationship. Adoption is one that comes to mind, simply because that is a right which has been historically, doctrinally associated so closely with marriage and family. I cite the example of adoption simply because it has to do with the bearing and the rearing of children. Our teachings, even as expressed most recently in a very complete doctrinal sense in the Family Proclamation by living apostles and prophets, is that children deserve to be reared in a home with a father and a mother.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: The emphasis that has been placed in this conversation on traditional marriage between a man and a woman has been consistent throughout. Do you see any irony in the fact that the Church is so publicly outspoken on this issue, when in the minds of so many people in the United States and around the world the Church is known for once supporting a very untraditional marriage arrangement — that is, polygamy?
ELDER OAKS: I see irony in that if one views it without the belief that we affirm in divine revelation. The 19th century Mormons, including some of my ancestors, were not eager to practice plural marriage. They followed the example of Brigham Young, who expressed his profound negative feelings when he first had this principle revealed to him. The Mormons of the 19th century who practiced plural marriage, male and female, did so because they felt it was a duty put upon them by God.
When that duty was lifted, they were directed to conform to the law of the land, which forbad polygamy and which had been held constitutional. When they were told to refrain from plural marriage, there were probably some who were unhappy, but I think the majority were greatly relieved and glad to get back into the mainstream of western civilization, which had been marriage between a man and a woman. In short, if you start with the assumption of continuing revelation, on which this Church is founded, then you can understand that there is no irony in this. But if you don’t start with that assumption, you see a profound irony.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS: On the issue of a Constitutional amendment prohibiting same-gender marriage, there are some Latter-day Saints who are opposed to same-gender marriage, but who are not in favor of addressing this through a Constitutional amendment. Why did the Church feel that it had to step in that direction?
ELDER OAKS: Law has at least two roles: one is to define and regulate the limits of acceptable behavior. The other is to teach principles for individuals to make individual choices. The law declares unacceptable some things that are simply not enforceable, and there’s no prosecutor who tries to enforce them. We refer to that as the teaching function of the law. The time has come in our society when I see great wisdom and purpose in a United States Constitutional amendment declaring that marriage is between a man and a woman. There is nothing in that proposed amendment that requires a criminal prosecution or that directs the attorneys general to go out and round people up, but it declares a principle and it also creates a defensive barrier against those who would alter that traditional definition of marriage.
There are people who oppose a federal Constitutional amendment because they think that the law of family should be made by the states. I can see a legitimate argument there. I think it’s mistaken, however, because the federal government, through the decisions of life-tenured federal judges, has already taken over that area. This Constitutional amendment is a defensive measure against those who would ignore the will of the states appropriately expressed and require, as a matter of federal law, the recognition of same-gender marriages — or the invalidation of state laws that require that marriage be between a man and a woman. In summary, the First Presidency has come out for an amendment (which may or may not be adopted) in support of the teaching function of the law. Such an amendment would be a very important expression of public policy, which would feed into or should feed into the decisions of judges across the length and breadth of the land.
ELDER WICKMAN: Let me just add to that, if I may. It’s not the Church that has made the issue of marriage a matter of federal law. Those who are vigorously advocating for something called same-gender marriage have essentially put that potato on the fork. They’re the ones who have created a situation whereby the law of the land, one way or the other, is going to address this issue of marriage. This is not a situation where the Church has elected to take the matter into the legal arena or into the political arena. It’s already there.
The fact of the matter is that the best way to assure that a definition of marriage as it now stands continues is to put it into the foundational legal document of the United States. That is in the Constitution. That’s where the battle has taken it. Ultimately that’s where the battle is going to be decided. It’s going to be decided as a matter of federal law one way or the other. Consequently it is not a battleground on such an issue that we Latter-day Saints have chosen, but it has been established and we have little choice but to express our views concerning it, which is really all that the Church has done.
Decisions even for members of the Church as to what they do with respect to this issue must of course rest with each one in their capacity as citizens.
In closing I will end by saying that James and I both have friends and family that are gay and we don't feel that the fact they are homosexual defines who they are. We hope that this will help them understand that we are not attacking them, but instead are trying to follow our beliefs that marriage was ordained by God as that between a man and a woman.Again, this article also does a wonderful job of explaining other issues concerning homosexuality and our beliefs, so please check it out if you haven't already.
